THE CHIQUIBUL FOREST - Friends for conservation and development
|
The Chiquibul Watershed is one of Belize's most crucial features, critical in it's role in supplying for the countries growing population through agriculture and providing water and electricity to over 40 % of the country. It is home to much of the iconic wildlife of Belize, who depend just as much on this watershed as society does. However, as much as we depend on the Chiquibul Watershed, it also depends on us to protect it from pollution and over exploitation can harms the quality of the water and the environment for both it's animal and human inhabitants.
Join Friends for Conservation and Development and the PACT bi-annual Watershed Alliance in spreading awareness and protecting this critical resource to Belize's population. SCARLET STUDIOS RESCUE SPOTLIGHT: DENT the Keel-billed Toucan
While passing through the Belize Bird Rescue earlier this year, I had the chance to meet this curious little keel-billed toucan with a dent in his beak, and even got the opportunity to feed him! Dent has since been re-released thanks to our friends at the Belize Bird Rescue, and is doing well!
As with all toucans, the bill of the Keel-Billed Toucan is specially designed for eating fruit efficiently, while maintaining a light weight to accommodate flight. The inside is reinforced with a crisscross of lightweight rods made of bone. The “tooth-like” protrusions help toucans catch and grasp food in the bill. |

TALES OF SCARLET STUDIOS: Yellow Headed Parrot Release
|
In 2016, a team of conservationists, The Belize Bird Rescue, and Programme for Belize joined forces to protect endangered Yellow Headed parrots where they are being threatened by staggering numbers of poaching and habitat loss. Working together, field researchers managed to pull 14 nestling parrots in dire threat of being poached, where they were raised in safety until they could be released in perfect health later that year.

Journey to Nohoch Ch'en - Feature film!
In early 2015, a team of 22 set out into the far reaches of Belize's treasured Chiquibul National Forest on a mission to reach the never before explored Nohoch Ch'en Sinkhole - a massive bowl with sheer limestone walls dropping 500 feet below the jungle, and breathtaking views. Join the crew as they discover the extraordinary and mystical features of Nohoch Ch'en, ranging from it's incredibly unique gradient of ecosystems, the rare and endemic species living inside, and an unknown ancient history left by the Maya people... Nohoch Ch'en is but one of many amazing features of the Chiquibul, but it is not without it's threats. Deforestation and incursions from over the border threaten this beautiful land, and it is up to the governing rangers of FCD (Friends for Conservation & Development), and all of us to protect it.
